The Tropical Allure -The Frangipani House
The Frangipani house sits on a 160 perch land in a quiet and tranquil neighborhood in Padukka. The location is surrounded
by forests, rubber, tea, coconut plantations, waterfalls, and paddy fields. This color palette is inspired by the natural
surroundings of the area.
The primary objective was to refurbish the old house by converting the existing mundane spaces into user-friendly spaces
that complement function. Hence the scope revolved around revitalizing the interior while also introducing additional
facilities.
The exterior colors are carefully chosen to harmonize with the surrounding nature. As sun sets, the interplay of light and
shadows transforms the colors, evoking different interpretations and moods in each space. The palette creates a calming
and soothing ambiance, with earthy tones that harmoniously align with the surroundings.
The building is white in colors it stands out contrastingly and comfortably through these colors and textures of the exterior
space. The use of textures and color combinations enhances the overall homogeneity of the outdoor area. Both interior and
exterior walls are complimented with white and gray tones. Pale gray tone emphasizes the cut cement floor. Soft green
shades are used for doors and windows, providing a soothing and refreshing element to the overall design.
The internal spaces, the intentional selection and fusion of colors, materials and textures reveal its relevance to the context
and it could be observed in each space. The entrance lobby and living and dining areas feature art works and cushion covers
designed with a combination of vibrant yet earthy colors, bringing an earthy feel to the interior. The minimalistic finishes are
occasionally enhanced by sculptures, paintings, and colorful batik artworks, creating focal points and a cozy and lively
atmosphere throughout the villa.
The overall approach by the Architect was to retain the old house’s authentic simplicity. However, the interior is designed
with a combination of vibrant yet earthy colors that create a lively ambience. Carefully selected /manufactured furniture that
is a combination of both decorative antiques and simple traditional furniture contribute to the authentic Sri Lankan interior
design. The minimalistic finishes are occasionally complemented by sculptures, paintings and colorful batik artworks,
providing interesting focal points and creating a cozy yet lively atmosphere throughout the villa.
Each bedroom is unique from one to another with complimenting furniture and array of colors that break the uniformity
while evoking sense of excitement. The carefully placed touches of bold colors in bed linen and accessories highlight its
unique characteristics and invite guests to appreciate its charm.
The redesigned modern spacious kitchen with a pantry island is a combination of soft green, soft blue, dark brown and gray
hues. This space is designed to be a gathering spot while cooking, thus creates a soothing, joyful atmosphere which was the
exact ambiance it was meant to evoke.
The palette is deliberately understated with just the right touch of colors in just the right places to energize the building by
highlighting the spaces without overwhelming them. Color is thus celebrated and brings the tradition to the forefront.
